Grace's story
Picture
Grace* first joined Woodcroft Morphett Vale Neighbourhood Centre as a reception volunteer while looking for work and hoping to gain more experience. After 5 months, she became a Volunteer Support Officer (VSO) at the centre.

“At first, I wanted to gain more work experience and improve my skills because I was looking for jobs. But now I really enjoy volunteering and feel happy helping the community.”

During her time at the centre, Grace learnt many new skills. She improved her communication and interpersonal skills and gained experience in administrative work such as managing enrolments, bookings, and documents.

Grace believes the experience she gained at the centre will help her in future jobs and job hunting.

The part Grace enjoyed most was the people and the welcoming environment at the centre. She described the staff, volunteers, and community members as friendly, supportive, and patient. She especially enjoyed helping people at reception and felt happy when community members thanked her for her help.

“When customers smile and say thank you, it makes me feel very happy and satisfied.”

Grace also appreciated the support she received from her colleagues.“Whenever I ask questions or ask for help, my colleagues are always supportive and patient.”

When asked what advice she would give to new volunteers, Grace encouraged them to be confident and talk to people.

“Be confident and speak to people. Everyone here is supportive and friendly, and you can help other people more than you think.”
