Joyce's Story
Prior to migrating to Australia Joyce was employed in human resources for 15 years.
After spending time caring for her family she was seeking opportunities to refresh her social and professional skills. Joyce had some volunteer administrative work in another centre however she really wanted to use her HR skills. An opportunity to volunteer as a Volunteer Support Officer in Recruitment at the Woodcroft Morphett Vale Neighbourhood Centre presented itself at just the right time. Volunteering one day a week at the centre Joyce was also a member of the Human Resources Subcommittee. Her role meant she was part of a team recruiting others and finding them appropriate roles to upskill and find employment - high school leavers, university students and parents returning to the workforce. She was so pleased CDO Lucy was able to identify her skills and find an appropriate role for her - “I was so happy to be at the centre and use my skills. The team were so professional and patient. They listened to my ideas. I was valued” Joyce had several short term employment opportunities, returning to her volunteer role in-between - a flexibility she very much appreciated - before she gained full time employment as a Human Resources Officer in a private company. “If I worked part time I would still volunteer. The centre is a positive place, people are encouraged and become confident”. |
