The Leatherwork Social Group
The Leatherwork Social Group meets weekly on a Tuesday morning from 9.30 until 12 at the Woodcroft Morphett Vale Community Centre.
While the name suggests a social event you can be sure leatherwork projects are created! Currently there are around seven folk gathering each week - a mix of new and experienced hobbyists who all enjoy the opportunity to catch up and practice their craft. John has been crafting with leather for twenty years. In 2020 he retired and was seeking a hobby to fill some of his time - “I was inspired by the leatherwork on show at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach and found a class at the Woodcroft Neighbourhood Centre”. Way back then there was a teacher however John insists he and others are happy to share their knowledge and offer guidance with anyone willing to have a go. His most memorable project is a gun holster designed to hold scissors and combs for his hairdresser son, it also won a blue ribbon at the Royal Show. At the other end of the experience scale Paul* was just six weeks in to his new hobby, “I lost my wife in early twenty three, I needed an activity and found the group on the Centre website, I love it, it’s good to chat and also do something with my hands.” Jason saw the group promoted on the Centre’s Facebook page six months ago, “I’m a creative person and I was looking for a creative outlet. It’s a modestly priced hobby, I really enjoy it”. Rex considers himself new to the craft though he’s been crafting leather for five or six years “I always liked being in my shed tinkering about.” Rex had a background in horses before retiring so leatherwork was familiar to him. He’s created various projects – stirrups, bridles, guitar strap, handbags and even a bible cover. “It’s not just retired men,” says John, “women come along too, everyone is welcome, retired or not.” Normally $5 per session the first session is a free come and try experience with materials and tools provided for a beginner project. Thereafter leather is available for purchase and basic tools are available for use. |
